One example of culture from Shadow in Hawthorn Bay is, Everyone in Scottland has a farm and animals to look after, the women and girls did this while the men and boys went to work. From what I understand, the women and girls clean the house almost all day every day, and cook dinner for the boys and men when they come home.
One example for this book ''Shadow in Hawthorn Bay'' is between her old home and her new home. Back where she was from she had to work a lot however she ran away to upper Canada. The men down there don't like her going to work. They rather her staying home and cooking also cleaning. But in this book I think Mary is used to where she is from and shows them how she does her own way of living.
